Thanks for the coverage given to the Cork A.U.L. over the last 31 years and in particular to the coverage afforded to Killowen A.F.C. The standard of reporting and information provided is first class in both the Evening Echo and on the A.U.L. website. Your replacement will have a hard act to follow. Is it any wonder that it’s hard to purchase an Echo after 6.00 on a Wednesday evening! We hope you might reconsider your decision but if not then enjoy your weekends and your always welcome to join in the craic on the sideline at Killowen.
From all at Killowen A.F.C.

Hi Folks,
A few months ago we sent a mail out looking for help in sourcing another field, so we can accomodate more teams as the club grows.
We are now coming up to the crisis point of our search. As things stand we can accomodate three winter teams on the current pitch - Senior team and two juvenile team (currently U12 & U13).
Next season we have sufficient players for 4 juvenile teams U11, U12, U13 & U14.If we do not find another field soon we will not be able to enter all of the teams into the leagues.
Can we all make one last effort to find a suitable field anywhere within the Cloyne, Shan, Ballycotton areas.
To see how much enjoyment the lads have had playing in the leagues, it would be a travesty to take this away from them.
Please, please, please try and help. If you have any ideas please contact Jason on 0876891327 ASAP.
thanks

Tom O'Sullivan (left) and Dan Cronin lift Crowley Cup and below Liam Corbett in relaxed mood after the win - he had the phone number of the nearest heart specialist ready during the final itself!
Ace defender Steve Corbett (left) and the winning UCC team
The Oscar Traynor players weren't the only AUL performers to win national glory this season. Just a couple of weeks back, UCC managers Liam Corbett and Ger O’Sullivan took 16 AUL players, drawn largely from the AUL 1 side but including five from the third division team, to the University of Ulster in Coleraine to contest the finals of the Crowley Cup, the junior Inter-Varsity Tournament.
The AUL lads weren’t expected to make that much of an impression; after all they were the Cork college’s second string. They may be second string but they were far from second class and went on to win the tournament, gaining a kind of revenge for the first team by beating Queen’s, their conquerors, in the final.
The tourney started well for the AUL players when Steve Berkley, Dan Cronin and Tom O’Sullivan netted in a 3-1 win over University of Limerick. That put them into the semi-final and here O’Sullivan and Cronin struck again as they recorded a 2-1 win.
Would they meet their A team in the final? No was the answer from Queens who qualified with a 3-1 win. The Belfast team might have been expecting an easy win in the decider until the Cork lads opening the scoring through Declan Coleman.
But it looked as if the tie would run to form when Cronin picked up his second yellow and Queen’s equalised for the consequent spotter. Striker O’Sullivan wasn't having any of it and he scored twice in six magic minutes to give UCC a 3-1 half-time lead.
The second half turned into quite a siege of the Cork goal but keeper James Purcell (he was voted player of the tournament) and his back four of Steve Corbett, Paul Fehilly, Kieran McCarthy and American Devon McNeill, stood firm and relief came late on when Steven Power crossed for fellow sub Denis Maher to crack in the fourth.
The UCC B panel: James Purcell, Devon McNeill, Steve Corbett, Paul Fehilly, Kieran McCarthy, Dan Cronin, Alan Murphy, Steve Berkley, Declan Coleman, Alec Rose, Tom O’Sullivan, Denis Maher, Steven Power, Alan Quigley, Aaron O’Brien, Simon McEoin and Su Shou.

"Could have been a bit of history in our match at Pfizer Park - Ronan Forde scored straight from the kick off. about two or three seconds we would say !!! you might need to check that with the ref (Eddie Mullins) Ronan who is the manager only togged out because of a depleted squad, He hasnt played for two years due to injury. Corkbeg went on to win 3-1.
The squad only travelled with 9 players which meant both manager and assistant manager Dennis o Sullivan had to come out of retirement to fill in.Ronan scored from the Kick off, Ball touched forward, Keeper off his line and struck it high over keeper and in under the crossbar. probably fastest goal ever!! about 2 seconds I'd say!!
went 2-0 up after about 10 mins, Aidan Cotter with a perfect placed free kick from 25 yards, curled around wall into bottom right corner.3-0 up midway through 2nd half, corner kick headed clear by defender only to fall to Jamie O Sullivan from 35 yards took it on chest and on the half volley rifled it into top corner. a class strike from a promising young player.
Carrigaline scored a consolation with about 5 mins to go from a stunning free kick from 25 yards which flew into the top right corner.Corkbeg changed tactics by playing 3 at the back and a five man midfield with the normal wingers playing in a defensive wing back role. our plan was to man-mark the the two centre forwards and opposing 4 midfielders leaving dennis o sullivan in a sweeper role in the back and Forde in a anchor/playmaker role in midfield.
Our two centre forwards Aidan Cotter and Darrian O Donoghue worked their socks off up front by cutting out the full backs from getting forward.Excellent performance from all players on Corkbeg side especially our two wing backs Dean Keegan and Chris Kelly Working hard man marking and taking opponents out of the game.
Eddie Mullins commented after the game that "in all my time reffing I had often seen that attempted but never came off" on Ronan Fordes Goal!! Is it the fastest ever?
John Linehan to me show details 7:37 PM (13 hours ago) Reply
Ken Twohig (Ex Man City, Temple Utd, and now with Mallow Utd) scored direct from the kick off about 4/5 years back for Strand Utd. This ball was played first before being hit, his was direct. What do you think?? JL
Weekend's third division games:
AUL 3
Despite noteworthy displays by Paul O’Leary, Shane Healy and Paul Kennedy, Richmond were pipped 5-4 by Greenwood in AUL 3. O’Leary, Paul Williamson and Tomas Radilek (2) were on target for the losers, Matthew Quilter (3), James Downey and Adrian Burke for the winners.
Darragh Coughlan (3) and Michael Brady netted for Ballinhassig in their 4-0 win over Ard-Na-Laoi.
AUL 3A
John Ronan, manager of the first team, led Macroom's second string to a good 3-2 win over Los Zarcos in AUL 3A. Ronan scored twice and that included hammering in the winner from a spotter he had earned himself. Stephen Murphy also scored for Macroom and their other big contributors were Brian Horgan and Denis Canty.
Watergrasshill Utd got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory against Rathcoole Rovers whose best were Tom Carroll and Shane Kelleher.

I have decided, after long and careful consideration, to retire as Press Officer of the Cork AUL at the end of this season.
I really enjoyed meeting the teams, the managers and players and referees at so many games, in all kinds of weathers, on all kinds of pitches, over the past 31 years.
It will leave a big gap in my life but I must say I am looking forward to “normal” weekends.
I wish the best to you all and to all those who work for the benefit of local football. I will no doubt be seeing you around as I intend to call to the local venues at match-time, certainly on the fine days!
