2006 FIFA Fair Play Day
18 to 24 September 2006

MEDIA RELEASE

The world unites in fair play

The Football Association of Ireland and its President, David Blood, appeal to players, referees, fans and officials throughout the country to help praise and promote the spirit of fair play on FIFA World Fair Play Day.

FIFA is holding the tenth World Fair Play Day this week to link this year’s events to another special celebration: the United Nations International Day of Peace, which is tomorrow 21st September, and he has issued an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities around the world.

The football family therefore wishes to commemorate the International Day of Peace by using the wonderful game and – most notably – its annual Fair Play celebration. This initiative has the personal support of FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.

“Fair Play is essential to our sport and to everyone involved in it,” declared David Blood. “We need to cherish and nurture the values of sporting spirit and work tirelessly to keep up the momentum. We are appealing to all football fans in Ireland to help us celebrate FIFA Fair Play Day and the International Day of Peace successfully.”

FIFA President Sepp Blatter recognises the fundamental role of Fair Play in sport and the need to apply it to all sporting activities, including children’s activities. “Children need strong values to grow up with, and football, being a team sport, makes them realise how essential discipline, respect, team spirit and fair play are for the game and for life,” he commented. “FIFA’s Fair Play campaign involves much more than simply promoting Fair Play on the pitch during a competition. FIFA is committed to encouraging Fair Play in society too, beginning with our future – with children,” he said.

“The most common way of commemorating the International Day of Peace is by observing a moment of silence or holding a special ceremony,” the FIFA President added. “FIFA would like to encourage its member associations to do this by gathering around a football pitch, highlighting the values of Fair Play, and reminding the football family of the meaning of peace and the need for commitment to its realisation.”

This is the tenth FIFA Fair Play Day to be celebrated since its introduction in 1997 and the third time that it will be linked to the International Day of Peace. In previous years, activities have been held in dozens of countries around the world, from grass roots to top-flight football and in many community-based projects.

The Football Association of Ireland began its celebrations at the eircom League Cup Final in the Brandywell on Monday last and today David Blood is writing to all Leagues and Affiliates urging their teams to observe the FIFA Pre-match and After-match handshakes at all matches this weekend.

SUPER DRAW

14th September, 2006
Ref: Superdraw 2006 / 2007

Dear Secretary ,

I am writing to let you know that College Corinthians will again be running our Superdraw this year – now in its 19 th year – and to highlight to you how the Superdraw presents a tremendous fundraising opportunity for your club.

The mechanic of the Superdraw is very simple:
· A Draw tickets costs €30 – this entitles the purchaser to entry into three Draws (one in December, January and February)
· 35 Prizes in each Monthly Draw – a superb range of prizes including cars, family holidays (including a trip to the Champions League Final in Greece), LCD TVs, Home Cinema Systems, Digital Cameras etc.
· College Corinthians organise and pay for everything to do with the running of the Superdraw – tickets, prizes etc.

So how can your Club use the Superdraw to fundraise ? I have attached an Information Pack with all the details, for consideration by your committee, but the basics are as follows:
· Your club applies for an allocation of tickets to sell in the Superdraw (Ticket Application form attached)
· For every ticket which your Club sells you keep 50% of the proceeds i.e. €15 per ticket sold!
· NO RISK! TROUBLE FREE ORGANISATION!

A number of AUL clubs successfully utilise the Superdraw to fundraise each year. As an example, Carrigaline United generate over €30,000 each year for their Club through the Superdraw!!

I would very much hope that you seriously consider using the Superdraw to fundraise this year. Should you wish, I and the Draw Committee would have no problem attending one of your Committee Meetings to answer any queries you may have – I can be contacted at Superdraw@gmail.com or at the numbers below.

Details of the draw launch are as follows:

Venue: Beamish & Crawford Hospitality Suite

Date: Wednesday, 20th September 2006

Time: 6pm

Yours sincerely,

Joe Healy - Chairman

The Murphy’s Stout Match of the Week sees Coachford entertain promoted Grattan Utd in the Premier League. Should be a good one. Experienced referee Christy Byrne is in charge and he’ll start Sunday’s game at The Glebe at 10.45am.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Ian Casey (pictured) of Hibernians who broke an ankle while playing with the club’s 2B team recently.

Well done to Bosco's Paul Cashman. He showed dedication above and beyond the call of duty last weekend: celebrated his engagement on Saturday night and then turned out for the Premier A team against Kanturk on Sunday.

See tomorrow’s ECHO for a full round-up and photos from last weekend’s games.

While Martin Conlon will be covering the Match of the Week, my likely games are Saturday’s FAI tie between Villa Utd and Togher and Sunday’s Premier A clash between Ballyvolane and Ballincollig. If there are any time or venue changes for these games, the home clubs might please let me know.
