Man of Match: Stephen McGee of Mayfield
 UNDER 17 Story one

College Corinthians 3  Mayfield  1

Two goals in the opening eight minutes proved crucial for College Corinthians as they went on to defeat a fine Mayfield side 3-1 in Division One of the Errea Sports Under 17 League. It was a very entertaining game between two well matched sides but that early deficit proved too much for the visitors.

Corinthians started well and Brendan Spillane put them ahead in the 3rd minute, blasting home from an acute angle past Mayfield keeper James Kirby after Wesley O’Connell, Roan Stanton and Denis O'Mahony had combined in the build-up.

And Mayfield’s task was doubled when they were caught cold again in the 9th minute. Then Wesley O’Connell found himself unmarked near goal and he stabbed the ball into the net.

Mayfield, with Stephen McGee emerging as the Errea Sports Man of the Match, came more into the game as the half wore on and McGee got inside his marker in the 39th minuet but shot narrowly wide. Four minutes later, McGee forced a good save from home keeper Thomas O'Connor who soon afterwards dived to his left to push away a Shane Fitzgerald shot.

Mayfield were enjoying a good spell and it took an excellent tackle by Gary Wills to prevent Fitzgerald’s effort reaching the target in the 36th minute.

Mayfield were rewarded for their persistence in the 55th minute and again McGee was a key contributor. He collected a clearance and slipped the ball on to Ian Fleming. The return pass was well delivered and McGee blasted the ball into the net.

But the promising situation for the visitors lasted no more than five minutes, cut short by a multi-pass Corinthians move that yielded their third goal. Skilful centre forward Wesley O’Connell won possession on the right and picked Brendan Spillane out 15 yards away from him. Spillane took off towards goal and unleashed an unstoppable 25 yard shot to the right of Kirby. It was a tremendous goal and more or less settled the issue.

But Mayfield and McGee kept battling. In the 69th minute, the man of the match had a cracking 30 yard effort come back off the bar.

Corinthians also had their late chances. In the 79th minute, substitute Rob Rose found himself on a one to one with Mayfield’s goalkeeper but shot straight at Kirby. In the 83rd minute, Kirby dived to his right to push a fine effort from Wills around the post for a corner.

In what was a tremendous game, Mayfield’s Stephen McGee worked tirelessly and was always dangerous when in possession. His goal and that shot that came back off the bar were evidence of his smashing contribution and he is a worthy winner of the Errea Sports Man of the Match award.
