MURPHY'S STOUT CORINTHIANS CUP FINAL

Blackpool Celtic 2 Crescent Athletic 1

(after extra time)

Crescent Athletic's cup jinx continued at Turner's Cross last evening when a last minute injury time penalty kick earned local rivals Blackpool Celtic a 2-1 extra time victory in the decider of the Murphy's Stout Corinthians Cup.

Corinthians Cup champions Blackpool Celtic.

Crescent, who have previously lost four cup finals, are still seeking their maiden win after losing a game they dominated in terms of possession. Blackpool had the Garry McCarthy Trophies Man of the Match in keeper Willie Matthews and he included a penalty save in his collection of top drawer stops.

Celtic took the lead totally against the run of play in the first half. After the break, Crescent missed a spotter before converting one to equalise. They were still on top but didn't take their chances and it looked like a shootout until the very last minute of extra time when Blackpool won and scored a penalty.

Last gasp loss for Crescent Athletic.

Blackpool manager Shaun Murray was ecstatic, "delighted for the players, for Tony "Cuddles" Murray, for club President Dessie Donnelly, for the main sponsors Breda's Bar and for all our supporters"

It was heartbreak once again for the Crescent management pairing of Niall O'Regan and John O'Donovan. In their playing days, they suffered losses in four cup finals, including the 1992 AOH decider, and the club's quest for a cup triumph continues.

Crescent made the better start and their catalogue of near things began in the 8th minute when a free from the right by David Constant went over off the bar. Three minutes later, Rowan Meeganí' throw ball was headed on to Adrian O'Connell but his close range volley was straight at Matthews.

There was little to bother the Crescent defence in the opening quarter but they found themselves a goal down in the 22nd minute. It was Blackpool's first attack of note. Hayes did well on the ball in the centre circle before releasing semi-final hero Colm Coveney who held off his marker before flicking the ball past the Crescent keeper.

Anxious time. Crescent manager Niall O'Regan grimaces as another chances goes abegging.

Crescent continued to dominate possession and it looked as if they would have their reward eight minutes into the second half when a rash penalty box tackle by Ian Murphy bowled over Casey Dineen. Constant took the resultant spotter but Matthews dived to his right to save well.

More Crescent chances before they were awarded a second spotter in the 81st minute, after good play between O'Connell and Meegan. Harry Dineen's hand ball was spotted and full back Tony Dunlea slammed the spotter past Matthews.

Dineen broke through for Crescent in the first period of extra time but again Matthews came to the rescue. The Pool then had the ball in the net via Coveney but the linesman had his flag raised.

The second period looked like fizzling out until the final minute when Crescent sub Willie Wyse dived to stop a cracking 18 yard drive by Celtic sub Richie Mannix. The handball was spotted by the linesman. Wyse was sent off and Hayes cracked in the penalty to kick start the celebrations in Breda's Bar.
