Football Legend Jaap Stam Enjoys Five-Night Stay At Luxurious Barberstown Castle
Former Manchester United player and international football star, Jaap Stam has given a glowing endorsement to Barberstown Castle after enjoying a luxurious five-night stay at the historic four-star castle hotel with his wife, author Ellis.
The football icon stayed in the castle’s opulent Presidential Suite, located within the original 13th-century tower of the castle. Set across two floors, the uber-luxurious suite blends medieval character with modern indulgence. Downstairs, guests are welcomed into an elegant sitting room, private dining room and guest bathroom, while the castle’s original stone walls remain proudly on display throughout the space. Upstairs, the suite features a magnificent four-poster bed alongside a vast luxury bathroom complete with standalone bath, his-and-her sinks and an oversized rainfall shower. Luxurious bed linen, robes and bespoke welcome amenities complete the five-star experience.
During his visit, Stam shared a series of images from the castle and surrounding countryside with his large Instagram following, praising both the unique atmosphere and hospitality of the property. Posting from the castle grounds, he wrote: “If you are wondering how it feels to sleep in a castle you need to go to this place!” He also praised the hotel’s “qualified and friendly staff,” describing the stay as a “great experience.”
Located in Straffan, Co. Kildare, Barberstown Castle has welcomed guests from around the world for more than five decades. Originally constructed in 1288, the castle evolved over the centuries through Elizabethan and Victorian additions layered onto the original medieval keep. The property later became home to music legend Eric Clapton between 1979 and 1987 before continuing its journey as one of Ireland’s most atmospheric and romantic castle hotels.
Now under the ownership of businesswoman Amanda Torrens, who acquired the property in 2021, Barberstown Castle is entering an exciting new chapter following a series of thoughtful renovations to its public areas, completed earlier this year.
The latest transformation includes the introduction of the elegant Garden Lounge, a sophisticated new social hub featuring dramatic vaulted ceilings painted in soft off-white tones with gold detailing, black-and-cream marble chequered flooring and bold contemporary artwork.
The adjacent Garden Bar has also been refreshed with heritage sage green interiors inspired by the rose gardens beyond, while the newly renovated Garden Suite combines quirky wallpaper, luxurious textures, chandeliers and deep-pile carpets with direct access to the terrace and gardens.
Set on 20 acres of landscaped gardens just 30 minutes from Dublin city centre and Dublin Airport, Barberstown Castle remains one of Ireland’s most distinctive luxury hospitality destinations. A proud member of Ireland's Blue Book, the castle offers 61 individually designed bedrooms, award-winning dining in the Barton Rooms and a reputation as one of Ireland’s most romantic wedding and event venues.
