Corinthians Cup final

Hibernians 0 Lakewood Athletic 1

Lakewood Athletic salvaged some silverware from what has been a memorable season when they scored a well deserved 1-0 win over first division rivals Hibernians in the final of the Murphy's Stout Corinthians Cup at Turner's Cross last night.

But the Ovens side made hard work of it. They ruled the first half but had just the one goal to show for it. They missed a sitter early in the second and late on hit the bar. Lakewood could have had lived to regret that big 46th minute miss as Hibs had a few flurries every now and then, though they rarely bothered Lakewood inter-league keeper Cian O'Callaghan.

Joe Dillon, who manages the Lakewood team with Gary Hoctor, is rightly proud of his side and especially the youthful element. O'Callaghan kept a good goal and fellow 18 year old Keith Hoctor was a dominant force in midfield but it was the running and skill of 16 year old Gavin Moore that really caught the eye and he was named the Gary McCarthy Man of the Match.

Moore was influential throughout and, in the 40th minute, set up the winner. He robbed an advancing defender and headed for the endline, got there and pulled the ball back for centre-forward Cathal O'Callaghan to fire home past advancing keeper Noel Murphy.

It was a just reward for Lakewood who had dominated the half. David O'Callaghan put the ball in the net in the 7th minute after a sweeping move and a cross by Ian Bohane but was ruled out for offside and then, five minutes later, Cathal O'Callaghan collected a Hoctor pass but his penalty box shot was well blocked by an alert Mick Lannon.

Midway through Mick Lee hit the post after a Lakewood free but the effort would have been ruled out for offside had it been on target. Lee didn't have his best night in a Lakewood shirt and will face some slagging after the miss of the match.

That came in the opening minute of the second half. Moore started the move. It was carried on by Ian O'Flynn who sent O'Mahony in but he was fouled just outside the box. Young Moore's well hit free was parried by keeper Murphy, straight to the feet of Lee, but the Lakewood defender somehow screwed it wide.

Luckily, the miss mattered little, as Hibs were unable to mount a decent spell of attacking. But, at 1-0, the Shanbally men were in with a chance and ace marksman Alan Jeffers wasn't too far over with a 79th minute shot. Four minutes later, Lakewood sub John Kelly hit the bar with a 30 yard free.

Hibs tried hard in the remaining minutes and the Lakewood defence, more nervous as the final whistle approached, had to work.  But soon, they had their reward after a long season.

Carry Me Home. Ian O'Mahony (10) jumps on Lakewood scorer Cathal O'Callaghan.
