AUL annual awards for season 2005/06

Ballyphehane are Team of the Year!

Ballyphehane Celtic, the Murphy’s Stout AUL Team of the Year for last season, received their award at a very enjoyable function at The Kiln last evening. It was doubly enjoyable for the lively southside outfit as their Dave O’Mahony was honoured as Manager of the Year. Other award recipients were John Linehan (AUL Referee of the Year) and Togher’s Pakie O’Connor and Kinsale’s Derek McCarthy (joint winners of the Golden Boot, each on 16 goals).

Celtic secretary Damien O'Leary is O’Mahony’s sideline colleague and said that last season was memorable: “It was a great year for us, winning the double and Team of the Year. This year, Premier A will be a big step up for us. People forget that only three years ago we were playing third division football.”

“This year could be a learning experience for the club. It is a very young side with most of the players still under 21. There are some very good teams in Premier A. I just hope to get a few results under our belts, get an early foothold in the division and take it from there.”

For next season, Ballyphehane will have more or less the same set of loyal players, most there from the third division days and the management team of Dave and Damien will continue in charge. Continuity also with the captain’s armband, which will be worn for the third year in a row by Philip Long.

At least one Celtic player is expected to make a big impression in Premier A and that is talented midfielder Danny Long. He won the Ballyphehane Player of the Year Award, remarkably getting every single vote from his fellow players.

Referee of the Year John Linehan enjoyed his current spell with the league: “I have to say I love working with the AUL, with the variety of teams and places travelled. I know more back roads in this county than most.”

“Last season was definitely my best and most memorable. I enjoyed ever minute, even the ‘precarious’ ones, and my last game of the season was that thrilling City Challenge Cup Final between Ballyvolane and Douglas Hall.”

“It was one of the most sporting and pleasurable games I did in 13 years, and a joy to see Jackie O’Driscoll back on his own pitch, watching his grandson John get the Cup from his brother Denis. You could not write that script.”

“This is one of the happiest memories, and although only recent, will stay with me a long time. Next season I have a new challenge with the MSL and the new format there has the potential to make the competition very interesting.”
