MURPHY YOUTH CUP FINAL

Lakewood Athletic 1 Tramore Athletic 0

Striker Denis O’Mahony broke the deadlock with less than three minutes to go to give Lakewood Athletic a 1-0 win over Tramore Athletic and their first ever triumph in the AUL’s premier youths competition.

It was a sweet headed goal by O’Mahony who set up one and scored one in their 2-0 semi-final win over Carrigaline United. This time though it was Lakewood right full Trevor Morrissey who was awarded the Evening Echo Man of the Match Award.

Lakewood had the wind to their backs in the first half but it was the city side that did most of the attacking in that period. It wasn't looking good for Ovens based Lakewood at the break but they raised their game in the second half and had no bother playing against the wind.

Tramore though came closest in the early minutes of the second half, very unlucky not to score in 52nd minute. Mark Murphy’s corner ball from the left was too high for keeper John Mulligan and Munster U17 player Graham Cummins came within inches of getting a touch but the ball carried on and hit the far post.

Tramore did make the better start to the game and the first quarter was played mainly in the Lakewood half but for all that there was no real threat on the Lakewood goal until the 21st minute and that was self-inflicted.

Keeper Mulligan was slow to react after a Tramore free by Graham Cummins was blocked and then returned into the box by Patrick McClure. The incoming Shane Finn was alert and nipped in to get his head to the ball as the keeper waited but was off target.

Lakewood finished the half strongly and they combined to get Ian O’Mahony into the box in the 33rd minute but, under pressure, he shot over the bar.

The Ovens team were much better after the break and almost scored five minutes in. Then a fine free by Darren O’Connor had keeper Roy Heaphy at sixes and sevenses but none of a number of Lakewood forwards, including Ian O’Mahony and Neil Conlon, could take advantage.

Tramore, well in it until late knockout blow.

The big escape for Lakewood, possibly the turning point of the game, came a couple of minutes later with that inswinging corner that eluded both keeper Mulligan and striker Cummins. Cummins might well have got a slight touch to it but in any event the ball flew to the far post, hit it and bounced to safety.

That escape aside, and a few Tramore half chances later on, Lakewood had the edge in the second half. In the 66th minute, they played a great passing move to get skipper O’Callaghan free in the right hand side of the box but his well hit shot was very well saved by the Tramore keeper.

Heaphy was lucky in the 73rd minute. Then an excellent through ball by Neil Conlon was collected by Denis O'Mahony. He outfoxed the advancing keeper but drove into the side netting.

Tramore had introduced sub Paul Kerrigan and he looked like scoring in the 75th minute but a brilliantly judged penalty box tackle by Conlon denied him a shot on goal.

Conlon was in action at the other ended with five minutes to go. He jinked his way up the right and sent in a dangerous low cross but that was well intercepted by keeper Heaphy.

Tramore had a corner in the 86th minute. McClure hit it well to the far post but the header by Gearoid O’Shea was too high. Lakewood took the ball upfield and forced two corners in quick succession. O’Callaghan sent over the second and O’Mahony headed in the back post winner.
