PREMIER STORY ONE
Rockville 2 Kinsale (blue) 1
Rockville upset defending champions Kinsale at Glen Park on Sunday morning and the Micky Forde inspired homesters scored a valuable 2-1 win in the Murphy’s Stout Premier League.

Forde should perhaps have opened the scoring in the 6th minute when he broke away only to see his effort well saved by keeper David O'Callaghan.

Kinsale attacked for the next thirty minutes but could find no way past emergency keeper Liam Myers. Then Mick McAuliffe lifted the siege and his precise long ball sent Forde away again and this time, despite a slight delay as he outfoxed a couple of chasers, the inter-league man made no mistake and Rockville hit the front.

The pattern didn't change much over the ninety minutes. Kinsale’s Dave O’Donovan saw his header from a corner go just wide before Forde, this time sent in by Wayne Hogan, shot inches wide six minutes into the second half.

Rockville were lucky at the start of the third quarter. Kinsale sub Ryan Coyle came in at the end of a good move and saw his close-in shot deflected out for a corner. Peter Jones swung it in and Pat Murphy rose well above all challengers but sent his header over the bar.

The home side, with central defenders Terry Connolly and Denis McAuliffe jamming the central channels, doubled their lead in the 80th minute. Forde picked the ball up in halfway and headed for goal. Jason McGillacuddy ran up the right; Forde found him and Jason’s lob was very well judged and beat the back-pedalling keeper.

Kinsale pulled one back three minutes later. A Rockville defender handled and Derek Delea put away the spot kick. Rockville lost two players in the following minutes, both John Long (85th) and Hogan (88th) picking up second yellow cards. But the home side held on and made Kinsale’s journey to Blarney last night a much tougher prospect than it might have been.
