Hibernians Waterford
Munster JUNIOR CUP

Village United 2 Hibernians (Waterford) 1

Skipper Conor Jones fired in the late winner as Village United advanced to the last eight of the Lucozade Sport Munster Junior Cup with a hard earned 2-1 win over Waterford visitors Hibernians at Silverheights on Saturday.

While the football wasn't top quality, neither side could be faulted for commitment. Tackles flew in hard and fast but the contest was sporting throughout.

Hibs did seem to have a bit more craft upfront and their equaliser was the best goal of the game but they gave away the softest of openers and then had less than three minutes to reply to the Jones strike.

Village had given away an early goal in their FAI exit to Freebooters but they started well on this occasion. Still, Hibs came close in the 9th, Eddie Walsh shooting just wide after the home defence had failed to interrupt the move that also involved Pat Delahunty and the impressive Joey Phelan.

The first half had little else by way of goalmouth action. Each side had its brief periods of superiority, its half chances. Take this 20th minute exchange as an example. Village got a corner after Eric Burns came close to turning in a Kevin Dunn free. Hibs quickly cleared and got Phelan into the box but his shot on the turn was easy for keeper Jamie Donovan.

The second half was better and Village almost scored 12 minutes in. Then Eric Burns crossed from the right and a side-footed volley by Jinty O'Sullivan flew over off the Hibs bar.

The Village defence then reacted poorly as a Pat Delahunty cross came in and a couple of Hibs players had chances to bury it but all failed, the danger ending when Ray Grant’s effort was taken off the line.

A mistake put Village ahead in the 68th minute. A weak cross from the left by Eric Burns was covered by keeper John Arrigan but he allowed the ball dribble through his legs and couldn’t get back in time and it rolled over the line.

The Waterford side fought back well and gained the initiative and equalised in the 75th minute. Philip O’Sullivan timed his pass well and got Grant free on the right and his well hit cross was headed home by Phelan.

Village finished the half the stronger and came quite close in the 78th minute but sub Brian Sheehan was unable to capitalise when a Terry Lotty shot rebounded.

Lotty and Sheehan had better luck in the 87th minute. Sheehan's fine header from Lotty’s corner had the Hibs backline in a spin and Jones, standing in the six yard box, took full advantage to blast the ball into the roof of the net and send Village into the quarter-finals where’ll they’ll play the winners of the UCC v Tralee Dynamoes game.
