PREMIER LEAGUE
Togher Rovers  1  Rockville 4

Rockville moved to the top of the AUL Premier League with a well deserved 4-1 away win over Togher Rovers at Clashduv Road on Sunday morning. Mick McAuliffe, a former Golden Boot winner, grabbed a hat trick but, truth to tell, the Togher defence was far from its best.

Togher put in their usual bright start. Centre-forward Eddie Byrne cracked a 3rd minute pile-driver off the bar and, two minutes later, had a firm header saved by Rockville’s goalkeeper Kieran Cogan. In between, midfielder Brian Lenihan fired just over from 30 yards.

Rockville, with midfielder Eric Doolin beginning to dictate in his area, gradually got a grip and it was Doolin who sent McAuliffe away for the 18th minute opener.

In the 24th minute, Togher were awarded a spot kick after Austin O’Connor was pulled down inside the box. Up stepped Brian Lenihan to slam the ball beyond the reach of Kieran Cogan for his side’s equaliser.

This led to a good spell for Togher but Cogan did well to get out ahead of Andy Keegan as he tried to each a Carl Brown ball in the 31st minute and then the keeper saved a Linehan free kick. In the 40th minute, Daniel Cooper should probably have done better than hit his breakaway shot straight at Cogan.

In the 43rd minute, Rockville’s Doolin once again made marvellous use of the ball when he delivered a pin point pass for Eamonn Cassidy and it took an equally good tackle by Togher’s Liam Dawson to prevent a score.

Rockville had the better of exchanges after the break and took the lead again in the 57th minute. Referee Christy Byrne allowed a good advantage as McAuliffe got away from his man to knock the ball past the keeper who didn't react quickly enough to the danger.

Rockville’s Eric Doolin nearly got one himself in the 71st minute. He lobbed the advancing keeper but his shot bounced wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

Jason McGillacuddy was another in good form for the winners and his prefect corner looked like the ideal opportunity for McAuliffe to complete his hat trick but this time the striker headed over the top.

McAuliffe make handsome amends five minutes later. McGillacuddy released Wayne Hogan on the right and McAuliffe raced onto the pass and rounded the keeper before tapping home.

McGillacuddy scored a spectacular goal in the closing minutes, rising high in the box to volley home a corner from the left by Doolin, the searing shot flying in over the head of the helpless keeper.
