AOH CUP

Blarney United 2 Togher Rovers 1
(after extra time)

There was over one hundred and ten minutes of intense action at O’Shea Park at the weekend as home side Blarney United reached the fourth round of the Murphy’s Stout AOH Cup with a 2-1 extra time win over Togher Rovers.

The action may well have been of high quality but most of it was played out in the midfield sector. Defences generally were on top and there were little or no scoring chances in the first half. The second half though was more open.
Blarney then began to build the pressure and Keegan seemed lucky enough to get away with a hand ball in the 55th minute. But his luck didn't hold and in the 65th minute he was penalised for handling during a spell of Blarney pressure and the penalty was well put away by Steve Jennings.

Togher took up the challenge and mounted attack after attack in a bid for the equaliser. But it looked as if it would never come. But it did and in spectacular style. Keegan picked up a Blarney clearance some twenty five yards from goal and his rocket flew past Collins and into the roof of the net.

Blarney were a little aggrieved as midfielder O’Leary was lying injured on the six yard line. But Ray soon recovered and that incident was forgotten six minutes into extra time. O'Leary’s thunderous free kick crashed back off the bar and sub Derek Healy headed the ball across the goal and out of reach of the scrambling keeper Houlihan.

Blarney, who won the coveted old trophy for the only time in 2000, are into the draw for the fourth round, the last 32.
