KICKING OFF THE LORD MAYOR’S CHARITY GAME FOR CORK ARC
Cork’s Media Personalities Unite for Lord Mayor’s Cancer Charity Match
Cork, 9 April 2013: Leading members of Cork media are joining forces for the Lord Mayor of Cork’s Charity GAA match on Friday, 26 April, 2013, in aid of Cork ARC Cancer Support House. The charity game will be played against Bishopstown GAA, home club of the Lord Mayor, Cllr. John Buttimer, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
“Since being diagnosed and commencing treatment for cancer I have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the people of Cork. Cork ARC provides a magnificent range of holistic services which greatly improve the quality of life of the cancer patient while at the same time developing awareness and understanding of cancer in the broader community. I am also extremely grateful to the organising committee, members of Cork media, Bishopstown GAA club and everyone who has agreed to take part in this charity event. I know that it will be a fun event which will raise funds for a very worthy Cork charity”, said Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. John Buttimer.
The teams will be under the watchful eye of GAA legend, Seán Óg Ó hAilpín, on the night as he will referee for the charity fundraiser game.
The Media team managers, renowned Cork footballers Bríd Stack and Noel O’Leary, have high hopes for their team which includes John McHale (Evening Echo), Denis Hurley (Irish Examiner), Rory O’Hagan (RedFM), Finbarr McCarthy (96FM, C103), Louise Cashell (Cork Independent) and Jonathan Healy (Newstalk) amongst others.
The Bishopstown side, led by Paul Montgomery, Captain of Bishopstown GAA, have assembled an equally impressive line-up, including John Mullins (Augmentis), Tony Daly (Pfizer) and many of Bishopstown’s sporting heroes.
“The Cork media wanted to show our support for the Lord Mayor, and together we hope to raise some much-needed funds for Cork ARC, which does a tremendous job on a voluntary basis to support those affected by cancer, directly or indirectly, at their holistic centre in Cork,” said Rory Noonan, Chief Sub-Editor of the Evening Echo and a member of the organising committee. Other members of the committee are Rebecca Milner, sports writer with the Evening Echo, Jim Ryng and Robin Murray of Bishopstown GAA.
“We’re immensely grateful to the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. John Buttimer, for his support of Cork ARC and especially to the Cork media here, who generously support our work on an ongoing basis. We are now calling on the businesses and people of Cork to get behind this GAA match and raise sponsorship and funds for the benefit of all who look to Cork ARC for support”, said Hilary Sullivan, Head of Fundraising & Corporate Affairs at Cork ARC Cancer Support House.
As well as post match analysis, there will be a live Questions & Answers session with Cork Hurling selector Johnny Crowley and Cork Camogie captain Anna Geary, which will be sure to spark lively debate among the match-goers and players. All are welcome to attend the game and join in the Q&A session with Cork’s GAA legends.
The organisers would like to acknowledge the support and sponsorship of the Cork County Board and Chill Insurance, and are still welcoming smaller sponsorship opportunities at the match.
