MORE LEAGUE GAMES BEFORE CHRISTMAS PLEASE!
Kieran Horgan

On their way to the title in the Lucozade Sport Munster Junior Cup, Leeside defeated Carrigtwohill, Buttevant and Village B in the AUL group. Crosshaven of the Munster Senior League were their first victims in the open rounds and then there were wins over Newcastle West of the Desmond League and Regional Utd of Limerick.

Nenagh, who had been doing very well in Tipperary, were the semi-final opponents in Limerick and again Leeside came up with the goods to reach the final for the first time. In a memorable encounter at Turner’s Cross, they came from behind to beat Limerick’s Ballynanty Rovers 2-1. Derek Delea and Craig Donnelly (extra time) were the scoring heroes.

It was remarkable campaign, considering the amount of injuries that Leeside suffered during the season and the upset of the serious injuries suffered by Jimmy Barr in a chemical explosion at his workplace. Club secretary Kieran Horgan looks back.

“What can I say about the season we just had? We had some good ones over the last few years but this year winning the Munster Junior cup has to be the best the club has ever had. It’s a great achievement for our club and one we will celebrate and remember for a long time.”

“We started our league ok and by Christmas we felt we were in a good position but fell away in the new year. We had a lot of injuries, more so than normal, and at one stage in an AOH cup game had only 12 fit players. We played one Munster Junior game with only 13.”

“Joe Lyons was our captain for the year, a year I’m sure he won’t forget. Richard Gettings and Derek Delea did most of our scoring ( Craig Donnelly was injured for most of year). New signings Andrew Keegan and goal keeper Mick Brosnan fitted in very well and Alex Nodwell played very well after coming up from the B team.”

“We have our awards night on the 20 June where the player of the year will be named. Once again Derek Delea has to be in the running but Richard Gettings and Alex Nodwell will give Derek a run for it.”

“Our managers for the year were Gary Tobin, John O’Sullivan, and Jimmy Barr O Sullivan. As you know, Jimmy was involved in an accident in work and missed the last few weeks of the season.”

“We will hold our AGM later on in the year. Next year we hope to make a better effort in the league. If we can play in the league every week the way we play in the cup then I’m sure we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. We feel if more league games can be played before Christmas then the league can be more exciting and more teams can be involved towards the end of the year.”

“We’re looking forward to defending the Munster Junior and also playing in the Munster Senior Cup for the first time. We would like to thank all the clubs who rang and wrote to the club wishing us well before the final and also for the kind words and inquiries about our injured manager Jimmy Barr.”
