Buttevant, the champions

Inter City

AUL 3A CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY OFF
Inter Celtic 2 Buttevant 2
(Buttevant won 4-2 on penalties, after extra time)

Buttevant, twice winners over Inter City Celtic in the AUL 3A campaign, were looking at second place in this championship play-off at St Mary’s Park - until Brian Kelleher blasted in a 25 yard special with just seconds to go in normal time. Inexperience on the part of Inter City played a part in allowing Buttevant this late late chance and how well Kelleher took it.

The game itself wasn't quite the thriller the scoreline suggests and indeed there was little enough goalmouth action between two well matched sides. Buttevant were first to threaten and City had to withstand a goalmouth scramble before eventually clearing their lines in the first couple of minutes.

The City team took the lead in the in the 11th minute when Gordon Lynch headed home after Buttevant keeper James Ellard could only manage to palm the ball a long range free kick onto the crossbar.

And three minutes later, a free kick by Padraig Speight led to Inter doubling their advantage. The delivery was spot on and Lynch powered in an unstoppable header.

Paul Daly pounced on a weak clearance and he drilled it home from 20 yards to open Buttevant's account. Buttevant kept at it, searching for the equaliser and came ever so close in the 70th minute when John David Murphy’s tremendous free kick whistled inches past the post. And as the final whistle approached it looked as if their chance was gone until Kelleher hit that rocket.

Nothing much doing in extra time and so the battle for the championship went to a shootout and here the North Cork lads came out on top on a 4-2 tally.
