PREMIER
Grattan United 2 Villa Utd  1

The battle of the promoted sides in the Murphy’s Stout AUL Premier League ended in Grattan United getting the better of Villa United to record their first home league win of the season. Villa though will look back with regret to the first half when they missed many chances.

Villa did all the early pressing and Grattan keeper Adam Lynch was regularly in impressive action but he needed the help of a post in the 8th minute. Then Villa defender Paul Murphy came in unmarked at the end of a corner but hit the timber.

The Villa pressure continued. Brian Montgomery got in behind but shot wide, and, in 24th minute, Lynch made a great point blank save form Willie Harris who would bother the home keeper a few times more before the half.

The second half started in similar pattern but bit by bit Grattan were beginning to get their share of the ball and scored a great goal in the 70th minute.

John Kelleher got away on the left and fired a measured cross to the head of John Paul O’Sullivan and he thundered the ball into the back of the net giving Denis Murphy no chance whatsoever.

Grattan doubled their advantage in the 79th minute when captain Denis Cremin sent John Paul away on the left and he unleashed an unstoppable shot which flashed low and hard beyond the reach of the diving keeper.

Grattan’s tails were up now and they threatened to add to their tally, John Kelleher going particularly close,  but it was Villa who would get the next one. Striker Paul Murphy crossed to the near post and sub Lima Dennehy headed home. But that 88th minute goal was too little too late.
