The league was saddened by the untimely death of our friend and colleague Mr Paddy Byrne (Treasurer of the Cork AUL) and would like to extend its deepest sympathy to Dymphna and family at this trying time.
Paddy was one of nature’s gentlemen and was such a positive role model and inspiration to all that knew him.
To Dymphna and family, please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss at this extremely difficult time.On behalf of all in the Cork AUL League,
Yours Sincerely
Barry Peelo
PRO Cork AUL

If you or your club wishes to pay a tribute to Paddy,  send it to me by email at cork.billy@gmail.com. (Billy)

REMEMBERING PADDY

Paddy Byrne, chairman of the Cork Youths League and treasurer of the Cork AUL, who passed away overnight, after bravely battling illness for the past few years, will be a huge loss to local football.

Aside from his obvious administrative skills, Dubliner Paddy was well known for his courtesy to one and all. In some ways he was a politician, of the best kind, seeing what was possible and bringing together people, who didn't always see eye to eye, to get the job done.

Paddy began playing football with Richmond Boys where one of his opponents was Johnny Giles, then catching the eye with Stella Maris.

Paddy went on to play senior league football with St Patrick's, Bluebell United, and Johnson Mooney and O'Brien. Indeed, he played centrehalf with the LSL representative side in a game versus the MSL.

Paddy moved to Cork in 1975. He only recently retired having worked with BSS for well over 30 years and was a keen golfer, being a member at the Killarney and Lee Valley clubs. He also enjoyed the odd swim.

He joined Ballincollig as soon as he moved to Cork, beginning 23 years as a member, and played a few years with them. He soon joined the committee as assistant treasurer before going on to become treasurer and eventually chairman (a position he held for 14 years, up to his joining the AUL in 2000).

Paddy went on to be treasurer of the AUL and has been a member of the Cork Youths League management committee, first as treasurer and most recently as chairman, since its foundation in 2005/06.

He will be missed, not least by wife Dymphna and his family, to whom we in football offer our sincere condolences.

Tributes to Paddy Byrne...

If you or your club wishes to pay a tribute to Paddy, use comment facility below or, preferably, send it to me by email at cork.billy@gmail.com.

To the family of Paddy Byrne on your sad loss ,with deepest sympathies from all at city wanderers fc

To the Byrne Family on your tragic loss of a true GENTLEMAN. Our prayers are with you at this time. From all at Glen Celtic.

Paddy Byrne R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that everyone associated with Grangevale AFC has learned of Mr. Paddy Byrne's passing. In his position as treasurer of the Cork AUL Paddy was a loyal servant to Cork football and will forever be warmly remembered in the hearts of Grangevale supporters for his link to one of our great recent memories.

On 13th May 2008 we travelled to Ballea Road to play Carrigaline. We needed a win to clinch the AUL 3 title but with second placed Carrigaline unbeaten at home the general feeling was that a draw would be a good result to set us up for winning the league in our next match. However, we won 2-1. When the final whistle blew there obviously was excitement but without a cup in sight there was a slight anti-climax. Then, from nowhere Paddy Byrne came running up the centre of the pitch with the cup under his arm, made the presentation and kicked off mighty celebrations. During our dealings with Paddy it was obvious that he was a lovely genuine man. Grangevale AFC has lost a friend and extend sincere condolences to his family on their loss.

From Thomas Foley on behalf of Grangevale A.F.C.

Paddy Byrne was one of those rare people who rose above confrontation and only looked to see the good in all of our clubs. He was there for everyone whether Prem champs or 3rd division strugglers. All he thought about was the clubs in his beloved Aul.We have lost not only a genuine lover of the game but also a genuine lover of all things Aul,to Paddys family on behalf of all the Gratts we offer all our condolences to you,he was a great man,he cast a giant shadow.,,,,,,,,RIP Paddy from the Gratts.

I'd just like to say what everyone else is saying about Paddy. He was a wonderful gentleman. Cork football is at a loss without him. Thanks for all the wise advice Paddy. Finbar Walsh on behalf of Innishvilla Youths.

To The Family of Mr Paddy Byrne on your sad loss, Paddy Byrne will be big loss to Cork Soccer he was a gentleman and always there to give advice we will miss Paddy. With deepest sympathies from all at Kilreen Celtic FC - Donal Kelleher

It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Paddy. A true gent and very knowledgeable man of grass roots soccer. We would often hear club members and other clubs speak kindly about Paddy and how understanding he was with regards to running an amateur football club. His experience showed when he joined the AUL and done tremendous work. He will be a huge loss not only to the AUL but to Cork soccer as a whole. Deepest sympathy to his wife and family from all at Castleview AFC. RIP.

It is of great sadness that I write this after hearing the sad passing of a true gentleman in Paddy Byrne. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family along with all his close associates in the Cork AUL at this difficult time. Declan Healy - Village United

All connected with Ballyvolane A.F.C. wish to pass on our deep condolences to the wife and family of Paddy Byrne who in all his dealings with us over the years was a true gentleman, courteous and understanding, and a loyal servant to Cork soccer. He will be sadly missed by all. --- Derek Mellerick, Chairman.

Just to say what a great guy Paddy was and a very good friend to the Referee Society in Cork, a gentleman through and through and will be sadly missed by all in football. Our sincere sympathy to his Family and close friends. From The Cork Branch of the ISRS, (PRO, Gene Stephens)

We at Dunbar Celtic are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend Paddy Byrne. Paddy was a great football man but most of all a gentleman, we extend our sympathy and prayers to the Byrne family. Paddy's loss will be greatly felt.

All at Innishvilla soccer club would like to take the opportunity to echo the sentiments expressed regarding the true gentleman in Paddy Byrne; and to offer our condolences to the Byrne family at this most difficult of times.

During our time involved we found Paddy to be very supportive at all times always lending his good advice. Paddy will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure to have met him. May he rest in peace.-- Minty Fitzgerald Declan o Regan Andrew Keegan.

We at Churchvilla Football Club (Cloyne ) would Like to Say we were in complete sadness to hear of Paddy's Passing over the weekend, Paddy was a really Helpful Man , both in Person and over the Phone and will be a huge loss to all in the Cork Aul. We would like to Pass on Our Deepest Sympathies to His Family and His Club on this Troubled time. Paddy Always a Friend Both on And Off the Field - Brendan O'Connor - On Behalf of Churchvilla Football Club

Our sincere sympathies are extended to the family and close friends of the late Paddy Byrne. Paddy was a true soccer man and his interest and passion for the local game was incredible. In any dealings with Paddy, you were assured of a fair and knowledgeable hearing and always greeted with a smile. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by everyone in the Cork soccer community. - Aidan Downey, Manager,
Los Zarcos FC, Millstreet.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of an absolute gentleman, namedly Mr. Paddy Byrne. Our deepest sympathies go out to Mrs. Byrne and family. Paddy was always a true gentleman to deal with and always had a smile on his face. He will be remembered fondly. - Kinsale A.F.C., past & present

It is with deep regret and sadness I have just heard of the passing of Paddy Byrne, one of life's true gentlemen. I had the pleasure of working closely with Paddy over the last 3 years during my involvement with the Youths League team. I always found him to be extremely courteous and helpful and was always appreciative of his words of encouragement in the dressing room before and after games. I would like to extend my deep sympathy to the League on this extremely sad occasion. May he rest in peace. - Stephen Lynch.

The players and management of Crescent Athletic wish to offer its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Paddy Byrne.Rest in peace Paddy.

Youths Soccer: By Tony Fitzgerald
Munster were beaten by 2 goals to nil by a very good strong Leinster team in the opening game of the FAI Umbro U17 Interprovincials in the excellent Oaktree Sport’s Complex on Friday night.
The Munster side were rocked very early in the game when just after 6 minutes Leinster went ahead with an excellent goal. Abiola Sanusi of Shamrock Rovers took on the loser’s defence and then he picked out Carl Somers with a peach of a pass that teed up Centre Forward, John O’Connor, and the Crumlin Utd striker’s finish was clinical.
In the 22nd minute the winners doubled their advantage when they were awarded a penalty. A very clumsy challenge by the Munster Centre Half was rightly punished by a free kick and as the offence took place just inside the penalty area referee, J. Dermody, had no option only to award a penalty kick which Sanusi struck accurately to the corner of the net and though Andrew Moloney made a valiant effort and dived full length to his left the Granville Rangers keeper was unable to save.
Leinster were by far the better side in the opening 45 minutes and went close on a few occasions to extending their lead. The very impressive Marwan Azimi skipped past despairing tackles by the Munster Defence and then cheekily lobbed the keeper but unfortunately for him the ball landed on the top of the net.
Munster did create a few half chances in the 1st half.  Carrigaline Utd’s centre forward, Kieran Doran, was one on one with the Leinster keeper Craig Sexton but the Belvedere custodian comfortably saved Doran’s tame effort.
On the half hour mark Kilreen Celtic’s Gordon O’Sullivan hit a thunderous drive that was on target, but two defenders charged down his goal bound effort.
Munster were a much improved team in the 2nd half and created numerous opportunities but did not convert any of them. The hard working Eoin McGreevey went close on a few occasions but just couldn’t get the better of Sexton in the winners goal.
The next series of games will see Leinster taking on Connaught @ 2pm and Munster opposing Ulster @ 3-30 pm both games on Saturday in Buncrana. Leinster could be crowned champions on Saturday if they win their game and Munster beat Ulster because in the other game played on Friday night the holders, Connaught played out a 1 all draw with Ulster.
Munster: Andrew Moloney, Paddy Barrett, Jake Mulcahy, Brendan Cullen, James Starmer, Arminus Belevicious, Gordon O’Sullivan, Kieran Doran, Alan O’Driscoll, Chris O’Callaghan, Eoin McGreevey. Subs Used: Ciaran McCarthy, Mark Phelan, and Cian O’Connor.

WELL DONE

At a time when Cork City are regularly hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons, you'd be excused as a soccer person for keeping a low profile. But there is no need, keep the head up high. Non league clubs are showing the way, flying the flag. This picture, for example is of Mayfield's reserve pitch. Like a billiard table! Well done to Tony and Sandra and to the groundspeople in all the other local clubs that take pride in their work and to all the club men and women who keep the flag flying!

Disciplinary Meeting:

Wednesday 21th Oct. at 7 00pm in Turners Cross.
MESSAGE FROM TONY FITZGERALD....

THE AVIVA STADIUM

Following on from the visit of the FAI CEO, Mr. John Delaney, to a recent delegate meeting seeking club’s support to purchase Vantage Club Tickets for the new Iconic AVIVA Stadium in Lansdowne Road I wish to make the following points:

Purchasing 2 tickets on a direct debit scheme will cost € 50 per week, which is practically the same as an urban match fee for a Premier team.

Raffle 2 tickets for the opening game against Argentina-a sell out game- Sell 500 tickets @ € 20 per ticket raising € 10,000

Have raffle for 2 tickets for the most important home game-we are guaranteed a 1st seeded team in our qualifying Euro and World Cup campaigns-Again sell 500 tickets @ € 20 per ticket raising € 10, 000 per campaign.Implementing b & c will practically pay for the two tickets after just 2 raffles.Having 1 raffle per year will mean your club will make a handsome profit somewhere in the region of € 76,000 over the 10 years.

I strongly recommend the project and would urge all teams to support this campaign to enable the FAI to have our own home which is badly needed.

I have heard numerous supporters over the years, myself included, complaining that the FAI did not have a home of our own and this is now every supporter and soccer lover’s opportunity to be a part of the future of soccer in this Country and in the long term raise much needed funds for your own club.

I can assure all Amateur Clubs that the FAI are fully committed to ploughing money into the grass roots of football and if the clubs now support the FAI they will be assured the FAI will honour that commitment to help develop facilities.

There are other add on benefits i.e. being able to purchase tickets etc for the concerts that will be held in the AVIVA Stadium but my primary interest is the success of the Stadium for Soccer and we all have a part to play in ensuring that this project will benefit Soccer in this Country for future generations.
