THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES....
Photo from the Kiln last night
Mr Chairman, ladies and gentlemen. This is an honour that I will remember and cherish. My thanks to you all in the AUL committee.

I‘ve had many many enjoyable moments in the AUL and I must thank all the various committee members I’ve worked with over the years, not forgetting the likes of the late Paddy Barry and John O’Sullivan. While 31 years is quite a long spell, I have to point out that at least two of the AUL team, Tony Fitzgerald and Denis O’Driscoll, have been flying the flag for even longer.

Thanks to the ECHO for giving me the opportunity. I found out recently that I have worked under every Sports Editor that the Echo has ever had as Tim O’Brien, the gentleman that I started with, was its first Sports Editor. Then we moved on, working with great sports people such as Billy George who took us to colour, John Horgan and his 8 page Shoot, and now the fantastic John McHale.

Around this time 18 years ago, Tony Fitzgerald, Vince Cummins and myself met with Murphy’s on the subject of sponsorship. Things were getting bogged down in the detail until Jack Sheedy and Vince Giltinan arrived on the scene. For years afterwards, Jack took a personal interest in the partnership, in much the same way as Johnny Crowley does today.

As I said in the City Hall, the greatest satisfaction I get as I look back is the huge improvement in facilities. Keep the faith and keep up the good work.

Once again, thank you all very much and I’ll be seeing you at the various grounds over the season, starting with the opening of the splendid new Grattan Utd dressing room facility next Saturday.
