Pearse Celtic have launched a new website at

Visit to see the courses we offer in the Cork Region.
St John Ambulance, Cork City First Aid Courses and Ambulance Services

All teams intending to participate in U17 and Youth leagues are requested to return completed application forms now.Fees maybe paid at later stage and registaration forms can be returned in 1st week in August, but in your own interest the earlier the better.

Hi all, great to see such large number at AGM. Just a note that all U17 & Youth registration forms have 25 spaces but each team are only permitted to register a MAXIMUM of 20 players- there is no change of rule- additional blank spaces will be used by league to put on names of replacement players if teams decide to tranfer any player from their team. Under no circumstances can teams register more than the 20 permitted players.

Kinsale 11.09.83 C5
for more old pics, go to

Kinsale may have been beaten in the Linnane final and may have faded to third in the Premier but this season will be remembered as the one in which they won the sought-after AOH Cup for the first time ever, beating league rivals Park Utd in the Turner’s Cross decider.

Kinsale will have their new pitch open for the coming season and look
forward to playing on what looks like a great surface. The AGM of the club will take place shortly and they will be looking for new members to get involved for the coming season as the push is on to improve all their
facilities on the Forthill.

Ger Foran: “May we thank all the AUL committee for all their hard
work during the season and look forward to working with them again next
season. Finally may we wish everyone a great Summer break and look forward to seeing you all again next season, especially Grattan as we want that league title back!”
Dillon's Cross 4.9.99
for more old pics, go to

In their tenth year of existence, Dillon’s Cross finally got their hands on some silverware this year by winning the AUL 1B title. Dillon’s have been promoted from 3B twice and AUL 2B once but never as champions.

For such a small club to gain promotion two years running is a testament to the massive effort put in by the players and the backroom team at the club. The people who have been with the club from its establishment in 1998 have welcomed any new arrivals and it’s the family atmosphere and great rapport of the players that they attribute to their success this year.

Players like Philip Kelly (captain), Brian Meany, Graham O’Leary, Clive Kiely and Jason O’Donnell have all been there for the majority of the disappointments over the decade. Damien Wiley and John Kiely, no longer playing, also remember losing a play-off to Carrigtwohill and losing out to a five game winning run last season which saw Mayfield snatch league victory from Dillon’s by a single point.

This season in AUL 1B came down to three front runners in January - Dillon’s, Watergrasshill and St John Bosco’s. The turning point of the season from a Dillon’s Cross view was their 3-2 defeat of Bosco's in the East Cork side's own patch which effectively made it a two horse race between The Cross and The Hill.

Dillon’s knew that if they could avoid defeat in their final four games they would push Watergrasshill all the way to final day. The Dillon's lads thought they had let it slip when they left Leeside with only one point with a couple of games to go with The 'Hill having a similar result on the same night.

Ironically, it was the team that snatched the 2B title from Dillon’s last year who handed them the title. Mayfield defeated Watergrasshill on the final midweek game of the league. Dillon’s hosted their neighbours in the final game and although the league was won, the nine month unbeaten run in Silverheights was defended also - a 2-0 win wrapping up a fantastic season for the twenty five man club!

Kindly note Youth/U17 AGM will take place on Monday next.
Application & registration forms will be available at meeting so it is important that every club attend the meeting.
Venue: Ballyphehane Community Centre.
Time: 7-30 SHARP.
Date: Monday 16th June.

Carrigaline Utd Co Cup semi May 82 D13
for more old pics, go to

Unlucky last season, Carrigaline Utd came good this term and won promotion from AUL 3. If managers Ian O’Driscoll and John Buckley had their doubts after last season these were quickly dispelled when
30 players turned up to pre-season training determined to put right what happened.

In the early months of the season Carrigaline United showed great form in cup competitions, the highlight being a third round AOH Cup game against eventual winner Kinsale. O'Driscoll: “Trailing 3-0 at half time, we staged a remarkable comeback to take the game to extra time only to lose out in the final minutes of the extended time.”

“With cup commitments finished, we turned to the league in which we only played 6 games coming into the New Year. By April, Carrigaline had only lost one league game and had 17 league games to play between then and mid May. This meant three games a week for this young squad and a very large gap in points to be bridged between ourselves and leaders Grangevale.”

Grangevale had stood on the summit for the majority of the season and, on 4th April, they had a lead of 23 points over Carrigaline. Any slip ups in the remaining 17 games would make it very difficult for Carrigaline to gain promotion let alone challenge for the title.

A run of 21 games unbeaten allowed Carrigaline to set up a title match against Grangevale at Ballea Park on May 13th where Grangevale’s experience told and after a great battle they won 2-1. It is a testament to both teams that the league title came down to the last games to produce a winner. Promotion had been secured on the weekend prior to this game for Carrigaline when they defeated Leeview 2-0 at Ballea Park.

Players that really shone this season were Danny O'Driscoll in his new role at right back, keeper Declan Owens, centre half pairing of Paul Holland and Philip Fehily, Eoin O'Sullivan in midfield as well as Danny Meade up front.

O'Driscoll looks back with pride on the campaign: “Highs of the season were the AOH Cup game against Kinsale which seemed to inject a new sense of confidence into Carrigaline players, beating Richmond away in the County Cup, securing promotion against Leeview with three games remaining. On the night the loss to Grange was heartbreaking but the game could prove to be a very important learning exercise for Carrigaline United.”

“Again, credit must go to all the players involved and if this squad can react in a similar fashion to last season, then it is a good bet that Carrigaline United can bring a trophy back to Ballea Park next season.”

Carrigaline United Squad 2007/2008: Declan Owens, Kevin Murphy, Danny O'Driscoll, Paul Holland, Philip Fehily, Barry Houlihan, Cormac Creed Nolan, Derek McCarthy, Derek O'Connor, Robert Meade, Adam Daunt Sheehan, Eoin O'Sullivan, Chris O'Neill, Kieran Hutton, Danny Meade, John Murphy, Robert Cogan, Alan Jenkinson, John Bray, Stephen Corbett, Gary Holland.
Coaching Staff: Ian O'Driscoll, John Buckley and Tim McCarthy.

A season that finished on a double winning high actually started with some pessimism for Blackstone Rovers. The team spent last season in their first relegation battle, and only survived in the closing stages. The club was rocked further with the news that four of the team were heading abroad for the season.

The dark cloud began to lift in pre-season as Rovers went 7 games unbeaten, but 3 local derbies presented a hard start to the season. Last year’s 3rd place team Central were up first, and Blackstone were delighted to finish the three match run and a visit to Bosco's with 12 points.

Two more league wins and a Munster Junior Cup win against higher ranked Greenwood followed before league rivals Village came to Monard. Three down at the break, Blackstone pulled two back, but Village left with the three points and a first league defeat inflicted on the homesters.

Four wins in November included advancement in the Saxone and Munster Junior Cup led to a December quarter final against Northside neighbours Fairview in the Saxone Cup. In horrendous conditions, a late equaliser by Colin O'Leary in extra time took the game to penalties, where Fairview advanced. A cup hangover led to a draw in Corkbeg and a Munster Junior Cup exit to Mayfield.

It seemed to shake Rovers up, and eight wins in a row followed, with a win against league challengers Hibs and advancement to the last 8 of the City Challenge Cup the highlights. An opening goal with 15 minutes to go against Corkbeg looked like making it 9, but Corkbeg equalised, and another draw against Village a week later left it very tight at the summit of Division 2B between Hibs and Blackstone. Village and Blackstone met four days later again in the City Challenge Cup, and Blackstone won with a late extra time winner to advance to the club’s first ever semi-final.

A win against Passage two days later and Village's win against Hibs meant Blackstone went into the final game, against the aforementioned Hibs, needing just a point to win the league. A late winner by Hibs caused heartbreak for the Rovers, and a play-off between the two was necessary. Before the play-off, Blackstone came from two down against Kilreen to advance, with three second half goals, to the club’s first ever Cup Final.

The play-off took place three days later, and the closeness of the sides over the season was illustrated as the match was decided on penalties. Mass celebrations began as Derek O Driscoll's penalty hit the back of the net. And the double was completed with last Saturday’s 1-0 City Cup final win over Wilton Utd.

Manager Tony Dunlea was assisted by Gary Sheehan and Ivan Bevan during the season and his panel was: Jamie Boland, Derek O’Driscoll, Michael Twohig, Paul Murphy, Michael Geaney, Ger O’Brien captain, Brian O’Driscoll, Danny Long, Warren Forde, Colin O’Leary, Dave O’Connor, Pierse Carmody, Colin Hourigan, Owen O’Brien, Francis Cooney, Stephen Wall, Colin Bevan, Keith McCarthy and Andrew O’Brien.

The committee who served the club so well this season are: An Uachtarain Tony Bevan, Chairman Ivan Bevan, Vice Chairman George McCarthy, Treasurer Wayne Lee and Hon Secretary Colum Kelleher.

Ballyvolane Dec 84
for more old pics, go to

Ballyvolane held their AGM at sponsors Murphys Rock recently.
Chairman Derek Mellerick and all other officers were re-elected unopposed for another term. Michael Lynam was returned as Secretary and treasurer, Ger O’Riordan as PRO and Deccie Mellerick as assistant treasurer.

The chairman expressed satisfaction with the season as the A team finished 4th in Premier A in their second season to consolidate again but expressed a wish to challenge for the promotion places in the coming season. ” A few new faces together with a better commitment from some present players and we won’t be far away.”

He also paid tribute to Liam O’Riordan who came in late in the season as B team boss when all seemed lost in Division 1A but he kept them up by beating Inter City in a playoff amid great joy in Leeds Park. A special thanks to Donal Riordan of Leeds for preparing the pitch at short notice. Everyone was delighted that Liam has agreed to stay on as manager for next year with Deccie as his assistant.

Mellerick and Lynam will again call the shots for the Premier side. Premier captain James O'Shea was the player of the year and Colm McManaman won the second team award. Kevin O’Keeffe was a popular choice as clubman of the year. Chairman Mellerick says that training will commence early in July when both teams will meet at the club’s pitch at Whites Cross. “We are always willing to give lads a chance, so all are welcome.”

Grattan Utd Nov 1984
for more old pics, go to

"the AUL clubs seem to be enjoying somewhat of a renaissance and the rest of the country seems to be taking a lot more notice."

by Gavin O'Mahony

Well the season has ended for all but a few and once again we have against the odds won the Cork AUL Premier. Last season had its highs and lows and were new to me and I certainly enjoyed them but to go on a similar trip this season made it better again.

We had a great preseason this time around an our expectations were high but after 2 wins in the Mossie Castleview gave us a wakeup call to knock us out of the reckoning an it shook us somewhat. Our first 3 league games were draws and with Kinsale a Ballyphehane winning the first 3 it didn’t look good for us in the league.

Thankfully the FAI and MJC came at the right time for us an allowed us to get ourselves together again. The FAI threw us up hard game after hard game and it was a slog just to get to the open round.

Clonmel Celtic we dispatched and an away trip to New Ross was our thanks. We went 2 behind and fought our way back to equalise in the dying seconds and snatched a memorable victory on penos.

Next we were given a home tie against Castlebar from Mayo with the winners given a home draw in the quarterfinals. We started brightly, maybe too brightly and against the run of play we conceded (something which was to happen to us on quite a few occasions this season).

Again we fought back playing great attacking football and equalised with 2 mins left. Controversy followed and even with the extra man we couldn’t seem to get the ball into the Castlebar net. Penos came and went and we were out. The luck we had in New Ross didn’t come home with us and our dreams of the FAI were left in tatters again.

The MJC proved to be our strikers’ happy hunting ground with no less than 28 goals being scored in our first 5 games and all away from home. Away games to Kilmallock (Limerick) and Newtown (Clare) will be remembered for the fantastic finishing of our strikers and the all-round play of the team.

The Newtown game especially as Figo, Brian Sull and Shinky didn’t make the start of the game and it just showed the strength of our squad that we still got a fantastic result away from home.

The quarter final draw matched us with Ballynanty away in Limerick an again although we were in top form on the day an took a deserved lead we again conceded a sloppy goal with only 7 mins left in the game and in extra time pushing for the winner were caught twice on the break an went down 3/1 in aet.

I must say we were devastated after that game because after we went out of the FAI we thought we had a genuine chance of winning the MJC. We played very well on the day in both the FAI and MJC, but we learned important lessons from both defeats which will make us stronger next season.

With only the AOH and an outside chance of the league left to play for we gave the AOH our all and in the semi final we drew our rivals for just about everything in the AUL, Kinsale, up in our own place. Again we played well and came away with nothing as again after taking the lead we conceded 2 soft goals against the run of play.

While all the fun of the FAI and MJC was going on the rest of the Premier was getting along with their games and when we returned to league action we were 2nd bottom with 3 points from 3 games. Runaway leaders Glenthorn were followed by Leeside and Kinsale with Ballyphehane within touching distance and us bottom dwelling with Kanturk.

15 games later and out of a possible 45 points we took 40 to regain the league title. By any standards that is a fantastic achievement but to do it with the bad start we had in the league was astounding.

For every up there is a down and for our club our B side had to pay a heavy price for our A side's hopes. Weeks and weeks went by when their games were called off to ensure our A fixtures went ahead and form then was harder to pick up.

The step up in divisions didn’t pose a problem just the lack of games dwindled the squad from a strong 22 down to the bare 11 at the end and staying up just proved a bridge to far.

Sometimes what our A side can or do achieve can detract from the other achievements we reach over the season both on an off the pitch. We finally received full planning permission for our new dressing rooms having been stuck in red tape for some time and comes as a welcome relief.

Also this season we were honoured again with one of our players Pa Connors being selected to represent his country on the Irish junior side. We also had 6 players selected for Oscar Traynor duty, the O’Sullivan brothers Mark/John Paul and Dave, John Kelleher/Pa Connors and Brian O’Sullivan.

Hopefully this is something we can come to expect in light of the way our A side has been performing. We can now sit at the top table of junior clubs in Ireland and hold our head high. Cork football and especially the AUL clubs seem to be enjoying somewhat of a renaissance and the rest of the country seems to be taking a lot more notice.

Finally I would like to take the chance to thank a few people, my fellow committee members for all the hard work, much of which goes unnoticed an unthanked. To Pat Caulfield and Robbie O’Callaghan for their outstanding efforts this season with the A team To Edwin Martin for all the hard work he put in during a very long hard season for the B team.

To Richie Brown for his fantastic support and Martin O’Leary for keeping our pitch in superb condition. To Niall Burns of the Anglers Sports Lounge and his fantastic staff who supported us all the way a special word of thanks. Win, lose or draw ye always managed to cheer us up an to cap it all off the people who support us home or away in the rain or shine, Mick O’Sullivan and the Brooks brothers to name but a few.

Kieran Horgan

On their way to the title in the Lucozade Sport Munster Junior Cup, Leeside defeated Carrigtwohill, Buttevant and Village B in the AUL group. Crosshaven of the Munster Senior League were their first victims in the open rounds and then there were wins over Newcastle West of the Desmond League and Regional Utd of Limerick.

Nenagh, who had been doing very well in Tipperary, were the semi-final opponents in Limerick and again Leeside came up with the goods to reach the final for the first time. In a memorable encounter at Turner’s Cross, they came from behind to beat Limerick’s Ballynanty Rovers 2-1. Derek Delea and Craig Donnelly (extra time) were the scoring heroes.

It was remarkable campaign, considering the amount of injuries that Leeside suffered during the season and the upset of the serious injuries suffered by Jimmy Barr in a chemical explosion at his workplace. Club secretary Kieran Horgan looks back.

“What can I say about the season we just had? We had some good ones over the last few years but this year winning the Munster Junior cup has to be the best the club has ever had. It’s a great achievement for our club and one we will celebrate and remember for a long time.”

“We started our league ok and by Christmas we felt we were in a good position but fell away in the new year. We had a lot of injuries, more so than normal, and at one stage in an AOH cup game had only 12 fit players. We played one Munster Junior game with only 13.”

“Joe Lyons was our captain for the year, a year I’m sure he won’t forget. Richard Gettings and Derek Delea did most of our scoring ( Craig Donnelly was injured for most of year). New signings Andrew Keegan and goal keeper Mick Brosnan fitted in very well and Alex Nodwell played very well after coming up from the B team.”

“We have our awards night on the 20 June where the player of the year will be named. Once again Derek Delea has to be in the running but Richard Gettings and Alex Nodwell will give Derek a run for it.”

“Our managers for the year were Gary Tobin, John O’Sullivan, and Jimmy Barr O Sullivan. As you know, Jimmy was involved in an accident in work and missed the last few weeks of the season.”

“We will hold our AGM later on in the year. Next year we hope to make a better effort in the league. If we can play in the league every week the way we play in the cup then I’m sure we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. We feel if more league games can be played before Christmas then the league can be more exciting and more teams can be involved towards the end of the year.”

“We’re looking forward to defending the Munster Junior and also playing in the Munster Senior Cup for the first time. We would like to thank all the clubs who rang and wrote to the club wishing us well before the final and also for the kind words and inquiries about our injured manager Jimmy Barr.”

2007/8 REVIEW

Highlight of the AUL season was undoubtedly Leeside's magnificent triumph in the Munster Junior Cup. The East Cork team showed great skill and spirit as they came from behind to pip Ballynanty Rovers and follow in the footsteps of Passage (2002), Greenmount Rangers (1997), Ballincollig (1989) and Douglas Hall (1988) and Temple (1987), as AUL winners in recent times.

“It was a remarkable campaign, considering the amount of injuries we shipped,” says club secretary Kieran Horgan. “Indeed, we played one Munster game with just 13 fit players. Our managers for the year were Gary Tobin, John O‘Sullivan, and Jimmy Barr O’Sullivan. As you know, Jimmy was involved in an accident in work and missed the last few weeks of the season. Now, we’re looking forward to defending the Munster Junior and also playing in the Munster Senior Cup for the first time.”

“We would like to thank all the clubs who rang and wrote to the club wishing us well before the final and also for the kind words and inquires about our injured manager Jimmy Barr.”

Leeside were also involved in the chase for the Premier League. So too were Glenthorn Celtic, Kinsale and Park but it was champions Grattan who sealed it with victory over Kanturk in their second last game. Wilton powered to triumph in Premier A.

Kinsale lost the Linnane to Ballyphehane but had considerable consolation late in the season when they defeated Park in the AOH final. Rathcoole and Ballincollig were among the leading first division teams. Blackstone were probably top team in the second divisions while Grangevale and Leeds won their third divisions.

Top three games: Ballyphehane’s win over Ballymun in the FAI and their Linnane final win over Kinsale, Leeside’s Munster Cup final win over Ballynanty.
Top three goals: Craig Donnelly’s winner for Leeside v Ballynanty, Adrian Nash’s late clincher for Rathcoole in Corinthians final and John Naughton’s free kick special for Postal v Ballincollig in AUL 1.
Top three players: Derek McCarthy (Kinsale), Mark O’Sullivan (Grattan Utd) and Derek Delea (Leeside).
Unlucky three: Park Utd (runners up Premier and AOH), Hibernians B (runners up 2B) and Glanworth (Runners up 1A).

** 1945 –Some records suggest that South View beat St Paul’s in the final as reported in the Cork Examiner. However, this appears incorrect as the competition played for on that occasion was the MFA City Challenge Cup
*** 1964 – The MFA Council resigned in 1963 as a result of a dispute with the FAI regarding a date for the playing of the Munster Senior Cup final. Consequently, the Junior and Minor Cup competitions were not completed. The 1963 final was not played until 1964 when Blackrock were the winners and there is no record of the 1964 competition being played off.
