Wilton v Village, The Farm, Saturday 2.00pm

Wilton's Patrick Rocks previews: "The 2 games will have a massive say on the outcome of the league and promotion issues. The game in their place will be massive as they are very hard to beat up there and from a confidence point of view for Saturday it will be big.

Recently we have been very slow out of the blocks and if we do this on either game we will be made to pay. The lads have trained well this week. They realise what a massive effort it will take to get anything out of these games.

Hopefully they will be good games of ball as both sides try to play football. The outcome? Won;t be known 'til Saturday evening! That's how close I feel these games will be

Grattan United are to improve their existing facilities at O'Neill Park by installing a new dressing room building. The contract, with Allspace, was signed at Silversprings at the weekend. Grattan were represented by Liam Lynch (chairman), Don O’Leary (treasurer), George Murphy, Pat Caulfield and John Chambers.

Neal Murphy, Sales and Product Manager, represented the contractors and said it was a first for them. They have installed facilities for Home Farm and the FAI among others but the Grattan contract is their first outside of the Dublin area.

Other clubs in the Cork area could well be interested in this precast structure which can be installed on site in a few weeks. Further details (and references) at

We'll have more details in the next few this space...

Picture shows Grattan chairman Liam Lynch (left) with Neal Murphy of Allspace at the signing of the contract in Silversprings Hotel this afternoon.

Old Fullerians AFC from the Watford Sunday Football League in England (club website: visited Cork at the end of March and played friendlies against Killumney and Marlboro.

They enjoyed the trip:

"Hi Billy,
Both teams were wonderful hosts but special mention goes to Killumney United FC. We did indeed join in 'the craic' afterwards and spent many hours afterwards drinking away in the pub with both teams after each game.

Pics from the tour are available at

Just like to say thank you again as without your help Killumney United FC would not have stepped forward to play us.

The AWARE Charity Cup

Kevin O’Sullivan has been on with a reminder that the AWARE Charity Cup game is on Sat 3rd May at 6.00pm at Mayfield United Park. “This is a match between past players of Village United and Mayfield United. AWARE is a charity that deals with suicides and depression in families. Last year we made 5000 euro for this charity.”

Kevin himself will manage Village and Anthony Lotty will be in charge of Mayfield. “We have a function in Mayfield GAA Club the same night and we have four tickets to Old Trafford as a spot prize. We will also have fice jerseys for auction: two Sunderland, Cork City, Munster rugby and a Cork hurling jersey, all signed. This is a worthy cause and we hope for a big crowd again.”

Leeside will play Ballynanty in the final of the Lucozade Sport Munster Junior Cup on Sunday 18th May 2008 at Turners Cross, Cork with a 3-00pm kick-off.

Photos from Millstreet, thanks to Denis Lyne

With Leeside and Park concentrating on Sunday’s AOH Cup semi-final, it looks as if Kinsale and Ballyphehane should pick up league wins on Thursday evening. Grattan too are expected to gain another three points though manager Pat Caulfield will know the dangers of derbies when they make the short trip to take on Castleview in O’Sullivan Park.

It is an important night in AUL 1 with both Ballincollig and Douglas Hall, the teams expected to catch long time leaders Richmond, in action. Ballincollig will expect to see off Lee Rangers (who rather like this type of challenge) while the Hall could have it tough enough against Postal Celtic.

Buttevant, surprisingly the bottom side in 1A, will have to start picking up points soon but homesters Inter City won't make it easy. Blackpool Celtic are fighting for survival in AUL 2 and are away to Glenvale.

Hibernians, the leaders in 2B (having received three points from a walkover by Central Rovers) will hope to pile more pressure on leaders Blackstone by defeating Village Utd. But Village still have an outside chance and their players are fighting for places in the team for the forthcoming City Cup quarter-final against the very same Blackstone.

Three of the top sides in a very competitive AUL 3 are in action and all are expected to win. Carrigaline should be too strong for visitors Examiner/Echo while Leeview would just about have enough in hand away to Springfield. Ballincollig will enjoy home advantage against Hibernians who won't be easy meat.

Quite a few of you have been in touch with Robby O'Donoghue in Dubai (see previous post). He is delighted to hear from you:

I have got lots of emails from long ago friends in football, thanks to your website, I am most grateful to you Billy , I owe you big-time.

As Eddie O'Halloran calls it in his emails to me "Blasts from the Past".

I had a look at your photos in the website and saw Verolme FC, well I was a young engineer in Verolme Cork Dockyard, Cobh, we used to have games against Fords, Dunlops, Gouldings in the inter-house league in the summer time when the AUL was on its summer break.

There were lots of great players from all the clubs in Cork working in these Factories, they played with great rivalry, it was a tough baptism for a young guy like me playing against all the much older seasoned fellows, but I enjoyed it.

We in the Verolme team had John (Seanie) Dennehy St Marys, Mick Flynn Cobh Ramblers, Ollie Devine Cobh Ramblers, Liam Noughton Cobh Ramblers, Tim Stack Cobh Ramblers, Micksey Lyons St Marys, Bertie O'Sullivan ex Cork Celtic in goals and I know there was lots from the north side clubs but can't remember their names

2008 Cork Simon Community Football Tournament

The 2008 Cork Simon Football Tournament will take place on Saturday May 10th at the Garryduff Sports Centre. This is the third year that this event has taken place to raise funds to support the work of Cork Simon Community.

16 mixed teams representing companies across Cork will be competing in this fun 6-a-side competition. The Football Tournament is a fantastic opportunity for staff to get together and have fun representing their company while raising money for Cork Simon’s work with people who are homeless.

In 2008, Cork Simon must raise €1.85m to bridge the gap between statutory funding and the cost of running all of our projects and services. With your generosity Cork Simon Community can offer people hope: hope for a better future, for a better quality of life, a way out of homelessness.

Closing date for entries is Friday April 11th. The entry fee is €1,000 per team and with places limited to 16 teams, I urge you to complete the entry form above (double click on form to enlarge) and return it immediately.

If you are unable to participate you may wish make a contribution. Charity donations in excess of €250 are eligible for tax relief.

If you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch on 4929 407 or

Yours sincerely,
