CORK VERSUS LIMERICK

Three games in the fourth round of the Lucozade Sport Munster Junior Cup tomorrow afternoon and, in all three, it is Cork AUL v Limerick. The results could go 2-1 to Limerick with Aisling Annacotty and Newcastle West expected to get the better of Mayfield United and Ballincollig respectively and with better prospects for Kinsale, away to Knockainey.

Ballincollig are the only one of the Cork sides to have home advantage and the only team to be facing a side from the Limerick Desmond League. But it could have been an easier task for manager Eoin Fehily and his charges. Visitors Newcastle West are top of the Desmond Premier League and have a very impressive goals record of 28 for and 9 against. Beside, the quality of the Desmond League was underlined with their recent 2-0 win over the AUL in the Oscar Traynor Cup.

But Ballincollig used home advantage and their inbred never say die spirit to ambush Ballyphehane Celtic in this competition and Fehily and the lads will feel that can do it again tomorrow in the Regional Park (kick off 2.00pm).

Conor Cunningham runs a pretty efficient backline where Ian Goggin is also prominent. Rob Quinn, Gavin O’Callaghan and Owen O’Keeffe can drive them on from midfield and while Darren Forde, Gray Foulkes and flanker Steven Nolan are all capable of hitting the target.

Mayfield United, nominally the third adult string in the thriving club, are really up against it in Limerick as opponents Aisling Annacotty are one of the leading sides in the Limerick District League. They are in contention for the Premier title and that speaks volumes for their quality.

Mayfield United have surprised quite a few by getting to this stage of the competition and the management team of Ger Lotty and Jim Monaher will be keen to continue that trend against the odds. Aisling Annacotty are a top side but even they will have to work hard to get chances against a back line so well led by Brian Coughlan and backed by ace keeper James Kirby. Coughlan is off to Australia next month and will like nothing better than to leave with a shock win under his belt.

Chris Daly, Trevor Boyd and Trevor Daly do the business in the middle and Shane Shaughnessy can make inroads on the flank. Roy Crowley and Paul Foley know where the net is and others who can contribute include Alan Monaher, Paul Attridge, skipper Brendan O’Halloran, Steven Crowley, Patrick Duggan and Kieran O’Sullivan.

Kinsale were outplayed in the FAI by crack Tipperary side St Michael's last weekend. The seasiders, managed by Barry McGovern and Ger Foran, are on the road again tomorrow but will be hoping for a better result when they take on Knockainey, a side who ply their trade in the lower reaches of One B in the Limerick League.

The Cork side are experienced enough to bounce back from the Cooke Park reverse and strong enough to get past a side from below the top rank in Limerick. Derek McCarthy scored a great goal last week and expect him to do the business again tomorrow, not alone in scoring but in setting them up for the likes of Derek Varian. Declan Ryan and Jeremy O’Donovan are expected to be steady at the back while Peter Jones and Florence Lynch should have them ticking over nicely in the middle of the Park.

FAI CUP
Grattan United are also on their travels. They will have been boosted by their big win against Pearse Celtic last Saturday night but manager Pat Caulfield will know that New Ross Celtic, a leading side in the Wexford League, will present a tougher task in tomorrow’s FAI tie but it’s one that Grattan should accomplish.

Caulfield's crew, who have been further reinforced by recent signings, were on fire in the final quarter against Pearse last weekend. Internationals John Paul O’Sullivan and Pat O’Connor ran the Cork second division side ragged in the closing stages.

It won't be as easy tomorrow but the visitors should be able to steer a course to victory. With Adam Lynch out with a long term injury, Caulfield will have to decide between Tommy Martin and Mark Smith for the goal-keeping position. Brian O’Sullivan is likely to lead the backline again while John Kelleher and Eric Fleming will almost certainly be among those chosen to provide the ammunition for John Paul and company upfront.

Grattan had been due to play Kilmallock in the Munster Junior Cup. That game has been postponed and it is hoped to play next weekend.

COUNTY CUP: Glanworth have had their successes in the AUL but the County Cup is not among them. They start this season's campaign with a home date against Coachford. The visitors are doing well in 3A but Glanworth will start as favourites.
