There was a large attendance recently at Murphys Rock bar for the Ballyvolane AGM.

Chairman Derek Mellerick in his address stated that it was great to see the turnout so big as its easy to not bother when the season has ended. It is a reflection of the commitment to the club on and off the park and bodes well for the future. The outgoing committee of Mellerick, Michael Lynam { treasurer/secretary} & Decky Mellerick {asst.treasurer} were joined by Ger o’Riordan as club PRO.

Mellerick will continue to manage the club’s premier team and expressed satisfaction at the teams performance in their first season in Premier A. “We started ok but then hit a bad patch before recovering well to finish comfortably mid table.” We will need to pick it up a bit this season though as the section seems to be very strong”.

Tony oDonnell stepped down as B team manager to concentrate on schoolboys at Leeds and we wish him well.Dave Keane has stepped into the hotseat with experienced help from Decky Mellerick on the line. A long time member of the club, Dave was a popular choice with the players and will bring a fresh voice to the dressing room. “I hope to have a good go at retaining the City Challenge Cup for the three in a row,and to improve our league performances which we were a bit disappointed with last year”

Dave has brought in a few new faces and enticed back a few who had left the club. He continues,” Derek is taking some of last years team up premier so these lads will all get an opportunity to stake a claim. Most are local and will know the players on both teams” “This is important as it strengthens the bond within the club rather than an “us and them” scenario which affects a lot of clubs with two teams”.

Derek and Dave will have both squads training together pre season at their grounds at Whites Cross on Tuesdays and Thursdays and all are welcome. A special thanks to Bernard at Murphys Rock for his continued support and sponsorship.

The opening delegate meeting of the Murphy’s Irish Stout Cork AUL for the new season was held in the Doughcloyne Hotel on Wednesday.
Delegates were informed by the Chairman, Ted O’Mahony that the season will commence on week ending 25th/26th August. It was stated there will be midweek matches for 2 weeks, and the Linnane League Cup will be the 1st competition for all Premier teams and will be played on a league basis initially with qualifiers playing on a knock out basis.
Delegates were informed that the Murphy’s Irish Stout Cork AUL are organising an FAI coaching course on week ending 14th, 15th and 16th September in Cork. The course will cost €75 per person and will be held in Cork, probably in the Mayfield United Complex. The course will be run by Colin O’Brien and the minimum number of participants is 20, (open to all applicants) and any person interested in doing the course are requested to contact Martin Conlon, Hon Sec, in writing, e-mails accepted to: closing date for applicants is Friday 27th July.
Closing date for Umbro FAI Junior Cup is 20th August, and for the Lucozade Munster Junior Cup is 1st September, and all entry forms must be returned to Martin Conlon. The Chairman impressed on all delegates that in the Umbro FAI Junior Cup games that they must use Umbro match balls, as they not alone sponsor the FAI but also sponsor the Cork AUL. There was an excellent promotion of Umbro match balls with the top quality ball used by the International Team and National League Teams available for just €55 and also a FIFA proved match ball available for just €40.
Clubs were informed they must submit current up to-date Public Liability Insurance Certificates and the League must be indemnified and named on all P.L.I. Certs. Failure to do so will mean published fixtures will be cancelled and games awarded against teams in breach of rule.
The topic that aroused the most vociferous discussion at the meeting was the increase in referee’s fees and expenses. Never before have had I heard so many teams complaining about any one issue. One delegate stated “Referee fees are crippling teams” and that was from a representative of a City based team. Another made a valid point when he said “We need accountability and also need to get value for money” This delegate concluded by stating “We should have workshops between referees and club representatives” A referee’s beginners course will be held on 18th August and all representatives were encouraged to get 1 club member to do the course to increase the number of FAI affiliated referees to counteract the shortage of registered referees.
Club delegates were informed that hooks on the back of cross bars and uprights are highly dangerous and should be replaced with PVC sockets. There have been too many accidents in recent years with hooks and it is imperative that they are replaced.
