HELP THE KIDS (not the wren boys) ON ST STEPHEN'S DAY

Brian Newman of Postal Celtic has been on to say that on St Stephen’s Day (11.00AM) at O’Sullivan Park, in aid of the Children’s Leukaemia Ward in the Mercy Hospital, a team of Castleview over 35s will play a team of Postal Celtic over 35s on the splendid new Astroturf pitch. “The game is in support of the Christmas Santa run by Philip "The Sheik" Clifford which takes place in all Cork City sorting offices. Philip, through this fund, has collected thousands of euro each year for the kids.”

“So come along and support this great cause. You see will some cracking talent on view, in a game which should have everything (well maybe not quite everything). Admission is free but you must pay to get back out! All monies collected on the day will be donated to the leukaemia ward.”

Tony Fitzgerald has published the results on which the tables are based and you can see them at:

Have you played with Ard-na-Laoi at any time over the last 30 seasons. Then Timmy Lynch is looking for you. Next year is the club’s 30th and they’ll start the celebrations with a match between the present team and a side picked from past players. Later that evening, the 29th December, the annual fund raising night (including Christmas Draw) will be held in the Angler’s Rest. This is usually a great night and should be even better this year. Interested? Then contact Timmy Lynch at 087 9595715.

To all the clubs out there who have their pitches looking so well as we reach mid-November. Our pictures shows one from Mayfield United but I have seen many others (including Water Rock Park yesterday) which are looking very well indeed, well cut and well lined.

Great also to see such excellent time-keeping for AUL fixtures. Referees have said it to me and, of course, I have seen it myself, week in, week out: both teams ready well in advance of kickoff. Aidan Downey of Millstreet is one manager who deserves praise as, on a recent Sunday morning, he had his young charges down in Passage in good time to do their warm-up and ready with time to spare for a 10.45am kick-off.

Indeed, I have been “caught out” by an early kick off back in September. I strolled up to Silverheights to see Village and Dunbar only to find proceedings had started about ten minutes early and as a result I missed the team photos!

Deepest sympathy is extended to the Mulcahy family of Greenmount Rangers on the death of their mother. Mrs Mull, or Kit as she was best known, was the mother of Pat, Timmy, Finbarr and the late Donie and grandmother of Davie, Jonathon and Declan Cooke, all former players of the club. Kit was a great friend of Greenmount Rangers and for over forty years maintained the team jerseys in immaculate condition. May she rest in Peace.

Condolences are extended to the Chambers family (St John Bosco's ) on their recent bereavement. Their second team game against Village Utd was called off as a mark of respect.

Press Release
The World Unites in Fair Play
Tuesday, September 18th 2007

The Football Association of Ireland and its President, David Blood, appeal to players, referees, fans and officials throughout the country to help praise and promote the spirit of fair play of FIFA World Fair Play Day.

FIFA is holding the eleventh World FAIR Day over this week, 15th – 23rd September. These dates have been chosen to link this year’s events to another special celebration: the United Nations International Day of Peace (21st September), an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities around the world.

The football family therefore wishes to commemorate the International Day of Peace by using the wonderful game and – most notably 0 its annual Fair Play celebration. This initiative has the personal support of FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.

“Fair Play is essential to our sport and to everyone involved in it,” described David Blood. “We need to cherish and nurture the values of sporting spirit and work tirelessly to keep up the momentum. We are appealing to all football fans in Ireland to help us celebrate FIFA Fair Play Day and the International Day of Peace successfully.”

President Blatter recognizes the fundamental role of Fair Play in sport and the need to apply it to all sporting activities, including children’s activities. “Children need strong values to grow up with, and football, being a team sport, makes them realise how essential discipline, respect team spirit and fair play are for the game and for life,” he commented. “FIFA’s Fair Play campaign involves much more than simply promoting Fair Play on the pitch during a competition. FIFA is committed to encouraging Fair Play in society too, beginning with our future – with children,” he said.

“The common way of commemorating the International Day of Peace is by observing a moment of silence or holding a special ceremony,” the FIFA President added. “FIFA would like to encourage its member associations to do this by gathering around a football pitch, highlighting the values of Fair Play, and reminding the football family of the meaning of peace and the need for commitment to its realization.”

This is the eleventh FIFA Fair Play Day to be celebrated since its introduction in 1997 and the fourth time it will be linked to the International Day of Peace. In previous years, activities have been held in dozens of countries around the world, from grass roots to top-flight football and in many community based projects.

The FAI consultation meeting on non-league football will take place today Wednesday in the Rochestown Park Hotel, starting at 7.00pm.

Please ring in your results and match details to Billy Lyons at 087 7937789; on Sundays ring between 1.00pm and 6.00pm; if you play Saturdays, ring before 7.00. Text messages also accepted but if your phone has an email facility, please use it in preference, as it will make it easier at this end. In any event, emails may be sent to but remember that the same time deadlines apply. Note this is a new email address for this season.

I intend doing

Prem Leeside v Grattan Sun 10.45 Little Island.
Please let me know of any changes.
from referee Stephen O'Connell

The convenience of the internet brings us many offers and advertisements in regards to our interests.

I have been refereeing in Cork for the past 12 years and use it to escape the house on a Sunday morning just like all of us. Some e-mails are circulating the net with advice on screening of athletes and I was delighted to see on the AUL blogspot comments from our sports colleague at Leeview AFC, Dr David Hall, in relation to health screening for athletes and I completely agree with him.

Its great to hear the views of someone so highly qualified as him and who is aware of the local football scene. Mens health issues and screening are best addressed in the relationship between the family GP and patient.

From time to time one day first aid sports related courses with cert are offered locally by various parties. Some publish the content in advance in the form of e-mail and appear to have a very large and busy schedule for one days work. Sometimes the terminology used in these
courses are more medical than words commonly used in first aid.

Personally I feel as a former first aid instructor that the “Occupational First Aid Course “ which is either a three day event or 2 hours for 12 nights is the best way to learn and become certified as a first aider. I feel the voluntary First Aid bodies like St Johns Ambulance, Order of Malta, and Irish Red Cross , who cover many sport events and offer these courses at night for a small fee are the most experienced in delivering the first aid course.

I feel their longer course taught more slowly is the best way for clubmen to learn fist aid.
